Zanzibar confirms medical preparedness for CHAN

ZANZIBAR: THE Zanzibar Ministry of Health has said that it is well-prepared to handle various health concerns during the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 tournament, set to begin tomorrow.
The preparations are aimed at ensuring the safety of residents, foreign visitors and participating athletes.
During a recent visit to Lumumba Regional Hospital that has been designated to provide medical services during the tournament, Deputy Minister for Health, Hassan Khamis Hafidh expressed the ministry’s commitment to maintaining high health and safety standards for both locals and visitors throughout the CHAN 2024 competition.
He noted that hosting the tournament presents a unique opportunity for Zanzibar and showcases the government’s ongoing efforts to promote sports development under the leadership of President Hussein Ali Mwinyi.

“To ensure effective health services during this event, the ministry has made extensive preparations,” Hafidh stated.
“This includes the deployment of sufficient doctors, medical equipment, emergency transportation and essential medicines at Lumumba Hospital.” The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health, Mngereza Mzee Miraji, noted that the purpose of their visit was to assess the readiness of health services ahead of the CHAN 2024 tournament, which will see Zanzibar hosting four teams starting August 5th.
He stressed that the Ministry has implemented robust strategies to guarantee the health and safety of visitors, locals and athletes ensuring the overall success of the tournament.
Chief Medical Officer at Lumumba Hospital, Yasser El Bahy, confirmed the hospital’s readiness to provide services around the clock to both residents and visitors, highlighting that they have adequate supplies of medicine and equipment to manage any health emergencies that may arise.
The visit included members of the CHAN 2024 health committee from the Ministry of Health and focused on key locations such as hotels accommodating guests, the New Amani Complex stadium and Lumumba Regional Hospital.
The objective was to ensure that all health preparations conform to the required standards for the international tournament
