Morogoro begins 13.4bn/- bus terminal project near SGR

MOROGORO: THE Morogoro Municipal Council has commenced construction of a modern bus terminal near the Jakaya Kikwete Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) station, at a cost of 13.4bn/-. The terminal is part of the Tanzania Cities Transforming Infrastructure and Competitiveness (TACTIC) project.

Council’s Director, Mr Emmanuel Mkongo said recently in a report to the Morogoro Regional Commissioner, Adam Malima, during the official launch of the new bus terminal’s construction that the new bus terminal is expected to be completed in July, 2026.

He said the construction is part of another phase of the TACTIC projects. The terminal will include various buildings including a one-storey structure.

The facility will include a 30-room hotel, a bar and entertainment area, both small and large conference halls, and retail spaces: 10 small shops, seven medium-sized shops, one large store, and 11 office rental spaces.

Additional features will include modern food stalls for small food vendors, a police station, parking areas for buses, motorcycles and rickshaws, 15 passenger waiting areas, toilets, a security guard post and a perimeter fence.

Mr Mkongo also noted that two heavy-duty tarmac access roads, each one kilometer long, will be built for entry and exit to the terminal.

A large bridge will also be constructed to link the bus terminal directly with the Jakaya Kikwete SGR station.

He stressed that once completed, the terminal will enhance passenger transport services for travellers using the SGR to various destinations within and outside the municipality and Morogoro Region.

“This terminal will stimulate economic growth and improve transport efficiency while reducing travel time for the public,” Mkongo said.

During the launching the RC urged local entrepreneurs to seize the opportunity by investing in the area to modernise it and increase the municipality’s revenue base.

He also called on utility providers including water, electricity and road agencies alongside the Municipal Council itself, to ensure that basic services are in place before the terminal’s completion, so that it can operate effectively and offer high-standard services to the public.

“We thank the government for allocating the funds for the construction of this terminal. It reflects President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s strong commitment to ensuring that the people of Morogoro receive quality services,” Malima added.

On his part, Director of TIL Constructions Co. Limited, Engineer Ding Fubing said that the project duration is 12 months, assuring that it will be completed on time and handed over to the municipal authorities for use in boosting the local and regional economy.

Recently, the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government signed 12 contracts for the implementation of urban infrastructure development projects under TACTIC, benefiting 11 towns, including Morogoro Municipality, to improve transportation and logistics services.

This project continues the rollout of TACTIC infrastructure improvements in 45 towns, which have benefited from construction of paved roads, street lighting, stormwater drainage, bus terminals, markets, recreational parks and ferry crossings.
