Coast region earns 44.3bn/- from ongoing sesame season

COAST REGION: A TOTAL of 16,000 tonnes of sesame worth 44.3bn/- have been collected and sold through three auctions in the Coast Region during the ongoing 2025 marketing season, it has been learnt.

Coast Region Cooperative Union (CORECU) General Manager Hamisi Mantawela, told the Daily News over the phone on Monday that the region has set a target to sell a total of 20,000 tonnes of sesame in this marketing season—an increase of 7,000 tonnes from last year’s harvest.

“In last year’s marketing season, we managed to collect and sell a total of 13,000 tonnes of sesame and earned 45.6bn/- ,” he said, adding that the marketing was conducted through six auctions.

He added, “We are very certain that we will meet our target as there are still four or five more auctions to be conducted before the end of this season.” During the third auction held in Rufiji District, a total of 7,249,821 kilogrammes of sesame were sold at a high price of 2,510/- and a low price of 2,360/- per kilogramme.

Sesame is one of the leading cash crops in the Coast Region. Other major crops include cashew nuts, cassava, rice and sisal. In the Coast Region, sesame is mostly cultivated in Kibiti, Rufiji, Mkuranga and Kisarawe districts.
