3.4bn/- Mangamba water project completed

CONSTRUCTION of 3.4bn/- Water Treatment Plant at Mangamba area, Mtwara District has been completed.

Executive Director of Mtwara Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (MTUWASA) Engineer Rejea Ng’ondya said the facility now supplies clean and reliable water to residents of Mtwara Municipality.

“Following the completion of the project wananchi in Mtwara Town are now receiving clean and safe water contrary to the past, where they received contaminated water,” he said.

“It is like a dream to us, we never thought that we would have such clean water,” says Amina Omary, a resident in Mtwara Town. The construction of the water treatment plant started in October 2020.

According to Engineer Ng’ondya, the water treatment plant is one among other water development projects that aim at increasing provision of clean and safe water in the area.

“It is a big sigh of relief to us (MTUWASA) for having the water treatment plant, we now feel happy because our customers mostly the common people are receiving quality water,” said Eng Ng’ondya and thanked the government for funding the project.

He said before the construction of the water treatment plant, residents received contaminated water due to iron ore whose deposits rest on water sources in the area.

According to Engineer Ng’ondya the main water sources at area are boreholes.

Meanwhile, MTUWASA boss mentioned other water development projects being implemented at the area as rehabilitation and upgrading of water supply system at the cost of 19bn/- in Mtwara Urban and construction of water reserve tank at the cost of 500m/-.

He said the projects are part of government initiatives to increase Water availability by 95 per cent in the urban area come 2025. Currently water access in Mtwara Urban stand at 85 per cent.
