29.4bn/- set aside for roads construction, rehabilitation in Rukwa

THE government allocated 29.43bn/- in the 2022/23 financial year for construction, rehabilitation and supervision of road infrastructures in Rukwa Region.
Rukwa Regional Commissioner (RC) Ms Queen Sendiga told the ‘Daily News’ in an exclusive interview with this paper on the progress of the implementation of road infrastructures by Tanzania Road Agency (TANROADS) and Tanzania Rural and Urban Agency (TARURA) in the region during 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 in the region.
She further went ahead to explain that the funds will be for TANROADS and TARURA.
“Until September last year TARURA has received some 16.65bn/- and the rehabilitation is on progress while TANROADS has received more than 12bn/-,” explained the RC.
Updating, the RC further explained that during the last 2021/22 financial year both, TARURA and TANROADS received a total of 27.56bn/- for construction, rehabilitation and closely supervisions of road infrastructures in the region.
“I hope that the funds allocated by the government for the rehabilitation of road infrastructures in Rukwa Region will benefit citizens, small and big, contractors and creating short term employments for the youths and women as well and subsequently improve the income of families ” she emphasised.
Ms Sendiga warned people against vandalising road infrastructures by removing metals and selling them as scraps.
She warned those who will be implicated will face the wrath of the law.
“I’m appealing to citizens to continue being vigilant of the development projects because billions of shillings which are taxpayers’ money have been spent on them,” said the RC.
Ms Sendiga directed relevant authorities to establish livestock routes to avoid damage of the infrastructures “As it causes colossal losses to the government,” said the RC.
She further said road agencies in the region ought to oversee the projects without fear and value of money spend should be realised in every project
“Local functionaries and other stakeholders must be incorporated so that they can be vigilant and ensuring the projects are executed by contractors as per contractual agreement and not otherwise,” she emphasized.
On another development Engineer Suzana Lucas, representing Rukwa Regional TANROADS manager told RRB members that until September 2022 the actual condition of trunk roads at tarmac level covering 226 kilometres is good.
On his side, the TARURA regional manager, Engineer Samson Kalesi said until June 30, 2022 the Region has entered 49 agreements with contractors worth more than 11.28bn/- for rehabilitation of road infrastructures including bridges and culverts.
