18 in race for Teachers Union’s top post

DODOMA: EIGHTEEN candidates have been cleared to contest for the presidency of the Tanzania Teachers’ Union (CWT), while 19 are vying for the position of Vice President in elections scheduled for May 28–29 in Dodoma.
Among the notable contenders for the top post is former CWT President Leah Ulaya, who is seeking to return to the top office, alongside her former deputy, Ikomba Suleiman.
Other presidential aspirants include Barua Mwalimu, Chakupewa John, Julius Shangweli, Kasimba Robert, Kondowe Emanuel, Mahenga Hamisi, Malinga Ally, Mlobi Stephen, Mudui Charles, Mnyimbengu Rajabu, Mussa Ismaili, Mutungi Ngamera, Mbomba James, Ndonyalo Godhard, Nyatega Rose, and Twambo Tumaini.

Meanwhile, four candidates are expected to compete for the position of Secretary General.
The upcoming elections follow the successful completion of voting processes at lower levels of the union, including school branches, district, and regional offices. The union is now finalizing preparations for the national-level elections.
In addition to the President and Vice President, members will also elect officials to other key positions, including Secretary General, Deputy Secretary General, Treasurer, Representative for Teachers with Disabilities, Youth Teachers’ Representative, Women Teachers’ Representative, a member to the TUCTA Executive Committee, three trustees, and various departmental heads.
