160 maritime experts join WMUTAA to boost Tanzania’s blue economy goal
						DAR ES SALAAM: IN a powerful boost to Tanzania’s maritime future, 160 newly minted experts in fields ranging from maritime law and port management to marine safety and ocean conservation have officially joined the World Maritime University Tanzania Alumni Association (WMUTAA).
This growing network is not just about professional camaraderie it is becoming a driving force in transforming the region’s maritime sector.
These graduates, part of a global network of over 6,300 professionals from 171 countries, are uniting with a common goal: to elevate maritime expertise, especially in developing nations. Their mission is to tackle complex ocean challenges, influence policy, and unlock sustainable opportunities along the Western Indian Ocean coast.
At the heart of their work is a deep commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 14, conserving life below water. By sharing their diverse knowledge and frontline experiences, the alumni are shaping strategies that promote ocean health, boost marine economies, and ensure safe and efficient shipping practices in the region.
Tumaini Gurumo, WMUTAA’s chairperson, noted that over 160 Tanzanians have benefited from specialized training at the World Maritime University (WMU) in Sweden, with generous sponsorships from countries like China and others. These graduates are now being deployed across various sectors in Tanzania, contributing high-level skills to policy-making, port operations, environmental protection, and maritime security.

The upcoming WMUTAA launch event promises to be a landmark occasion. It will bring together stakeholders from across the maritime spectrum, including government leaders, donor country ambassadors, and sector expert,s to celebrate the alumni’s achievements and chart a bold course forward. The highlight of the event will be the presence of Professor Dr. Maximo Mejia, President of WMU, who will serve as the guest of honor.
As Tanzania looks to the ocean for economic growth and environmental resilience, this new wave of maritime professionals is ready to make a lasting impact not just locally, but across the global seas they were trained to navigate.
