144 survivors of mudflows disaster reunite with families

MANYARA: ABOUT 144 survivors of mudflows disaster that had hit Hanang District in Manyara Region and earlier on resided in temporary camps have been linked with their families.

Report indicates that the number of survivors who lived within three camps has dropped to 96 people from the previous 240 people.

A statement issued yesterday by the Chief Government Spokesperson, Mr Mobhare Matinyi noted that the government was continuing with the exercise to reunite the survivors of incidents with families and close relatives.

Residing in three camps the survivors comprise of 19 people residing at Ganana Primary School, 52 people at Gendambi Primary School and 25 people at Katesh Secondary School.

Mr Matinyi who also doubles as the Director Information Services, MAELEZO noted that the households vacating the camps are given food and various supplies to support their sustenance and restoration of their lives.

He observed that DNA for two children of the ages between a-year-old and three years was continuing for verification of their true identities.

On the other hand, he said no new bodies have been recovered, emphasising that the search was continuing, meaning that the death toll remains 89 people.

Meanwhile, one person was killed yesterday while 14 suffered minor injuries, when a passenger bus plunged into Simiyu River in Magu District, Mwanza Region, reports ABELA MSIKULA from Mwanza.

According to Mwanza Regional Police Commander (RPC), Mr Wilbroad Mutafungwa, the of the ill-fated bus with registration number T608 DMP, Mr Daudi Meshack lost control as it was ascending past Simiyu River bridge, only to let the vehicle accelerate backward and plunged into the river.

A one-year-old male child, named Yahya Elikana also went missing, said the RPC.
