Makongoro Nyerere wins CRDB bank’s World Cup trip campaign

DAR ES SALAAM: Makongoro Nyerere, son of Tanzania’s founding father Julius Nyerere, has emerged among the three winners of CRDB Bank’s FIFA World Cup campaign draw, attracting widespread public attention due to his family’s historic legacy in the country.

Makongoro was announced as one of the winners of an all-expenses-paid trip to witness the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted jointly by Canada, the United States, and Mexico. After receiving a phone call confirming his victory, he responded briefly, saying, “Thank you very much.”

His win has been viewed by many as symbolically significant, with the Nyerere family name continuing to be associated with major national and international events, even in areas such as sports and entertainment.

The other lucky winners in the draw were prominent businessman Arun Lodhia and Abdulraouf Suleiman, who will also join the historic journey to watch the World Cup matches live.

In the category of electronic prizes, winners of 85-inch television sets were named as Arina Kaswala, Lusekelo Michael, and Easter Kabakama.

Speaking during the draw held in Dar es Salaam, Karington Chahe said the campaign continues to provide customers of the bank with an opportunity to fulfill their dream of experiencing the FIFA World Cup firsthand.

He noted that a total of 20 winners are expected to benefit from the campaign, with 10 customers set to travel to the United States and Canada, while others will receive various prizes, including large-screen televisions and digital decoders.

“The World Cup opportunity is available to Tanzanians through the use of TemboCard services. This campaign is ongoing, and next month we will announce more winners who will travel to witness the tournament,” he said.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is expected to be one of the biggest sporting events in the world, hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

CRDB Bank said the campaign is part of its efforts to reward loyal customers while encouraging the use of its digital banking services.
