Z’bar steps up sports development with key upgrades
DODOMA – SECOND Vice- President Hemed Suleiman Abdulla stated that Zanzibar has made significant advancements in developing its sports sector, highlighting key infrastructure projects completed to nurture talent and host global events.
He shared these highlights in Dodoma while presenting the four year report on implementing the CCM 2020-2025 election manifesto in Zanzibar.
“The iconic New Amaan Complex in Unguja and Gombani Stadium in Pemba have undergone major renovations, transforming them into state-of-the-art facilities suitable for national and international competitions.”
Abdulla informed the enthusiastic CCM delegates that these upgrades include the construction of two football fields at the Amaan Complex, a judo hall, indoor courts for various sports, and a fully renovated hotel within the stadium premises. He noted that the total cost for these projects is 55bn/-, with 12.8bn/- allocated specifically for Gombani Stadium.
To further commit to sports development, Abdulla shared that the Isles government has endorsed plans to build 17 modern playgrounds or stadiums at the regional and district levels—one in each district.

“These projects aim to nurture grassroots talent and generate employment opportunities in the sports industry, ensuring a brighter future for Zanzibar’s young athletes,” he explained, eliciting cheers from the conference attendees. On the international stage, the Second Vice -President mentioned that Zanzibar’s investment in sports is already yielding results.
The national U-15 team, “Karume Boys,” brought immense pride to the nation by winning the CECAFA championship in Uganda in 2023. He stated that this victory is a testament to the potential of Zanzibar’s players when provided with the right support and resources.
Hemed underscored that these achievements highlight Zanzibar’s dedication to becoming a powerhouse in regional and global sports. With continued investment and strategic planning, the archipelago is well on its way to cementing its legacy in the world of sports.
