Z’bar reaffirms commitment to youth empowerment
ZANZIBAR: THE government of Zanzibar has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering young people and make sure they play the role of driving the nation’s political, economic and social progress.
Speaking at Utaani Secondary School, Second Vice President Hemed Suleiman Abdulla said the government recognises the vital role of youth and is taking concrete steps to enhance their welfare and development.
Mr Abdulla who represented President Hussein Mwinyi at the function said the event’s purpose was to acknowledge the contributions of young people, review their achievements and address challenges that require solutions.
To strengthen youth development, the government has intensified coordination by disseminating and raising awareness of the 2023 National Youth Development Policy among stakeholders.
He said the Ministry of Information, Youth, Culture and Sports is also preparing a simplified version of the policy to ensure young people can easily understand it.
He revealed that 16.5bn/- has been allocated for youth projects, including investment in youth development centres and supporting economic initiatives through youth councils.
In addition, the youth loan fund under the “4.4.2” initiative is being expanded, with applications now processed online through the Economic Empowerment Agency.

On skills development, he said the government is implementing the SEBEP project to equip youth with skills for self-employment and formal work within the blue economy, supported by vocational centres. Seven new centres will be built, alongside a dedicated blue economy employment curriculum.
Sports infrastructure is also a priority, with renovations of older facilities and the construction of new stadiums at district, regional and national levels to promote the sector.
