Zanzibar lowers fuel prices for January

ZANZIBAR: THE Zanzibar Utilities Regulatory Authority (ZURA) has announced reduction in prices of petrol, diesel and aviation fuel for this month. The announcement was made by Mr Mbarak Hassan Haji, Head of Public Relations at ZURA, while briefing the Journalists at the authority’s offices in Maisara. The new prices took effect from yesterday.

According to ZURA, the price of petrol will be sold at 2,813/- per litre, down from 2,815/-, a decrease of 2/-, equivalent to 0.07 per cent.

The price of diesel has dropped to 2,858/- per litre from 2,944/-, a reduction of 86/-, representing a 2.92 per cent decrease. Aviation fuel will now be sold at 2,485/- per litre, compared to 2,376/- previously, reflecting a change of 109/-, equivalent to 4.59 per cent. Meanwhile, the price of kerosene has been set at 2,900/- per litre, representing a decrease of 100/-, or 3.33 per cent.

Mr Haji said the price reductions were mainly attributed to a decline in global oil prices, reduced fuel importation costs and changes in foreign exchange rates.

He explained that ZURA sets fuel prices based on several factors, including average trends in international oil prices, importation costs through the Dar es Salaam and Tanga ports, and fluctuations of foreign exchange rates.

Other considerations include transportation costs, insurance, premiums to Zanzibar, government taxes and levies, as well as profit margins for both wholesale and retail fuel dealers.

He urged the public to purchase fuel only from licensed stations and to demand electronic receipts in order to avoid unnecessary disputes and ensure consumer protection.
