Youth footballers on Europe trip plan

ARUSHA: THE year 2024 will undoubtedly be a busy one in international youth football competitions, including teams from Tanzania.

As it stands, youths from the Magnet Sports academies from the headquarters in Dar es Salaam and their branch in Arusha will participate in several international football tournaments in Spain and Sweden.

Four teams of young footballers will fly to Madrid, Spain to participate in the annual MadCup from June 21 to 26 this year.

The MadCup tournament involves both boys’ and girls’ teams in various categories from Under-7 to Under-19 age brackets from more than 30 countries around the world.

MadCup is usually organized in collaboration with the Atlético de Madrid Academy.

Magnet Sports is outfitting four teams for the soccer tourneys, including the Under-9, Under-11, Under-13 and Under-15 players.

“We are also sending four teams to play in the Gothia Cup that is the largest and most international youth football tournament in the world, which is held in Sweden,” explained Mwalimu Chalamila, the Trainer and Coordinator of Magnet Sports Academy in Arusha.

Held annually, the Gothia Cup tourneys usually take place in Gothenburg, the capital of Västra Götaland County, where around 1,700 teams from 80 nations take part and they play 4500 games on 110 pitches.

This year, the Gothia Cup will take place from July 14 to 20, 2024 in Vastra Gotaland, Sweden.

The Magnet Sports Academy with 10 training camps, two centres based in Arusha and eight others operating in Dar-es-Salaam usually recruit and groom young footballers aged between 4 and 19 years.

With nearly 400 candidates to date, Magnet Sports provides basic training in football to build the youth’s foundation in the world’s most popular sport, sharing the training philosophy with Celta De Vigo Academy of Spain where they usually borrow their teaching manuals.

Arusha Magnet operates from the Don Bosco Centre and Saint Constantine International School grounds. They also have other eight centres doing the same in Dar es Salaam.

Last year, Magnet Sports managed to finish in the third position in the Under-15 teams’ category in the MadCup of Madrid Spain.
