WiLDAF trains Tanzanian media on how to combat online gender-based violence

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Women in Law and Development in Africa (WiLDAF Tanzania), in collaboration with GIZ, has organized a three-day special training camp for journalists as part of preparations for the 2025 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign.
The training aims to support national efforts through the upcoming National Dialogue on Digital Violence and Violence Against Women in Elections.
The camp brings together journalists and communication experts to strengthen their capacity in various areas, including public relations, media ethics, professional journalism, digital safety, and gender-sensitive storytelling that upholds human rights.
Through the training, participants are expected to gain practical skills on how to report gender-based violence with integrity, professionalism, and ethical responsibility, while using technology safely and for positive social impact.
Speaking during the opening session, WiLDAF Tanzania Executive Director, Advocate Anna Kulaya, said the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to build a network of journalists who promote social change through ethical reporting that protects dignity, justice, and gender equality.

“We want to see journalists taking the lead in amplifying the voices of women and girls, speaking out against all forms of violence, and using technology in safe and positive ways,” said Advocate Kulaya.
A representative from GIZ emphasized the importance of partnering with the media to combat technology-driven violence, particularly against women participating in politics and elections.“Ensuring that women’s voices are heard without fear is the foundation of democracy. Through this training, we are nurturing a generation of journalists who champion justice, equality, and social accountability,” the representative added.
The camp also serves as a build-up to the National Dialogue on Technology-Facilitated Violence and Violence Against Women in Elections, which will bring together stakeholders from government, civil society, the media, and development partners to discuss joint strategies to eliminate gender-based violence both online and offline.
WiLDAF Tanzania and GIZ reaffirmed their commitment to continue investing in education, advocacy, and communication innovation to promote a gender-equal society that respects human rights.
