CONGO-Brazaville: The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of its African Regional Director-elect, Dr Faustine Ndugulile.
In a message shared on its X account (formerly Twitter), the WHO African Regional Office extended condolences to Dr Ndugulile’s family, friends, and the Government of Tanzania.
“The entire @WHOAFRO family is deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, @WHOAFRO Regional Director-Elect. Our deepest condolences to his family, friends, the government, and the people of Tanzania,” the post read.
Similarly, the WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, expressed shock and sadness at the sudden passing of Dr. Ndugulile, offering condolences to his family, friends, and the Tanzanian Parliament.
“Shocked and deeply saddened to learn about the sudden passing of Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, @WHOAFRO Regional Director-elect. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, Parliament, and the people of Tanzania,” Dr. Ghebreyesus shared on his X account.
On August 27, 2024, Dr. Ndugulile was elected Director of the WHO Africa Regional Office in Brazzaville, Congo, competing against candidates from Senegal, Rwanda, and Niger. He had pledged to work tirelessly to ensure access to quality healthcare across the African continent.

The Ministry of Health, where he once served as deputy minister, paid tribute to him via social media, acknowledging his significant contributions and transformative impact on healthcare services in Tanzania.
Dr. Ndugulile passed away in India, where he was receiving treatment.
Former Minister for Health, Ummy Mwalimu, who worked closely with him, described Dr. Ndugulile as a dedicated and highly skilled professional.
“We worked together with goodwill, love, and profound respect for one another. During our tenure, we celebrated many successes and faced numerous challenges together, but we never wavered—we stood firm in fulfilling our responsibilities,” she wrote on her X account.
Ms. Ummy further praised him for his exceptional abilities and deep understanding of health issues, not only in Tanzania but across Africa and globally.
Dr. Faustine Ndugulile will be remembered for his remarkable contributions to health and his unwavering commitment to improving lives across the continent.
