WHO hails TMDA’s maintenance of medicine, vaccine systems

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA Medicines and Medical Devices Authority (TMDA) has successfully maintained its status at WHO Maturity Level 3 of the Medicines and Vaccines Regulatory System following a comprehensive assessment conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2023.

A statement issued today by the Director General of TMDA, Dr Adam Fimbo, said TMDA is proud of this milestone as it demonstrates its regulatory expertise with transparency, professionalism and adherence to internationally accepted standards in ensuring the quality, safety, and efficacy of health products.

He said that since 2018, Tanzania, through TMDA, made history by becoming the first health product regulatory authority in Africa to achieve this WHO Maturity level 3 (WHOML3) stage.

“Maintaining this status after the 2023 review is a sign of sustainable regulatory systems that confirm their leadership and significant contribution to protecting public health.

“This is an important step for public health, including ensuring the quality, safety, and efficacy of medicines and vaccines, protection against substandard or counterfeit medicines, and the ability to respond to health emergencies such as disease outbreaks,” he said.

Furthermore, Dr. Fimbo said this step is a testament to TMDA’s continuous efforts in strengthening regulatory systems, and places Tanzania in a good position internationally, especially in participating in joint regulatory programs, increasing regional and international market opportunities, as well as attracting investors in the pharmaceutical and medical device sector.

He said TMDA invites them to celebrate this achievement as a country and recognizes the contribution of development partners, various stakeholders, health professionals, and citizens in general in protecting public health.
