VP issues directives on clean energy

DODOMA: VICE-PRESIDENT Dr Philip Mpango has said that while the government finalizes the processes for the establishment of clean cooking energy fund to provide subsidy which will enable low-income citizens to afford gas prices, various stakeholders should support implementation of the initiative.

The VP said that the stakeholders can support the initiative through microloans, village community banking or women’s groups to ensure that women access clean energy equipment.

Opening the Women’s Clean Cooking Conference 2024, Dr Mpango directed the Ministry of Finance to review tax rates for clean energy cooking stoves so that citizens can afford to buy them easily.

Dr Mpango urged villagers and individuals who earn income from the carbon trade to use the revenue to pay for clean cooking energy.

He also called on research institutions, private sector and other stakeholders to come up with simple and affordable technologies in order to fast track transition from the use of dirty energy.

VP said the technologies needed include those for obtaining clean energy stoves to enable cooking of long-cooking foods such as beans and legumes instead of using charcoal or firewood.

He also called on the private sector to support and contribute to the campaign to eliminate the use of dirty energy.

He said it is important for the private sector to use Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds to enable households and institutions around them to access clean cooking energy in urban and rural areas.

Dr Mpango said only eight per cent of Tanzanians are using the clean cooking energy while 90 per cent of the households are using firewood and charcoal for cooking, thus posing threats to the forest and environment.

“Clean cooking energy is the national agenda and President Samia Suluhu Hassan is the champion, we are working on the modalities to ensure that it is available at reasonable prices,” said Dr Mpango.

He underscored the need for financial institutions to issue soft loans to entities that offer food services to more than 100 people daily so that they can fix clean cooking energy valves.

The Vice-President also called upon all ministries, public institutions as well as local government authorities to set aside a budget to include clean cooking energy in their projects and programmes.

He said the public lacks awareness on the importance of clean cooking energy as well as health and environmental hazards due to the application of charcoal and firewood.

Dr Mpango said President Samia has instructed that in the coming ten years, more than 80 per cent of Tanzanians must be using clean cooking energies emanating from electricity, natural gas, LPG, briquettes, energy saving cooking stoves among others so that the country can restore forests and protect the environment.

“Climate change effects are real; we must preserve our environment and forests, thus tree cutting should come to an end “he insisted. President Samia, said the VP, has also formed a national clean cooking energy committee which will oversee the agenda implementation.

As for users, he said the government has also formed the Clean Cooking Energy Fund which will be issuing subsidies to manufacturers so that the public can access the facilities at reasonable prices.

He called upon investors to look into opportunities of coming up with latest and affordable technologies for centres cooking food services to more than 100 people on a daily basis as the government has banned the use of firewood and charcoal.
