Vodacom commits to drive up cashless economy

DAR ES SALAAM: VODACOM Tanzania has reaffirmed its commitment to a cashless society, emphasising its crucial role in bridging the digital divide and promoting financial inclusion.

The Company’s Director of the Consumer Business Unit, Ms Brigita Shirima made the statement on Tuesday when launching the festive campaign in Dar es Salaam.

“By enhancing mobile connectivity and digital payment solutions, Vodacom is empowering communities with seamless access to financial services, driving economic growth, convenience and security nationwide,” she said.

She said in this yearend campaign, more than 1,500 customers who bought their tickets using M-Pesa will be refunded their tickets home during this festive season to go and spend quality time with loved ones.

“The refund will target customers travelling by bus in various routes in the mainland but also those taking the ferry to Zanzibar,” she said.

She said the campaign serves to remind customers to enjoy the festive season whilst reinforcing Vodacom’s commitment to connecting Tanzanians wherever they are and enhancing a cashless society by using M-Pesa.

Vodacom’s M-Pesa Director, Mr Epimack Mbeteni, said that the initiative is a key step towards transforming the financial landscape and empowering individuals and businesses across the country.

“During the period, we will also have over 100 free tickets on the SGR train for select customers and discounts on the plane tickets for those that book and pay for their tickets via M-Pesa,” he noted.

Mr Mbeteni further explained that by encouraging the use of M-Pesa for everyday transactions, Vodacom is not only promoting a cashless economy but also making financial services more inclusive and accessible to all, particularly in remote areas.
