Ulega calls for approach to relieve traffic congestion

SINGIDA: MINISTER for Works, Mr Abdallah Ulega, has urged experts in his ministry to develop innovative solutions to alleviate urban traffic congestion, a measure that could also help increase government revenue.

Speaking at the inauguration of the ministry workers’ council meeting in Singida, Mr Ulega insisted that in addition to the usual agenda, it is vital to address key public issues such as traffic congestion.

He encouraged attendees to use the meeting as a platform for brainstorming ideas, given the presence of numerous experts.

Mr Ulega proposed exploring solutions like utilising roads designated for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system to reduce congestion on regular roads. He pointed out that solving traffic congestion could present a valuable opportunity for the government to generate additional revenue, especially in areas equipped with rapid transit infrastructure.

“Is there a way for regular vehicles to use the BRT lanes for a fee during peak hours when normal roads are congested? Why should a road remain underused for half an hour while traffic on another road is completely gridlocked?” he questioned.

He cited the Mwalimu Nyerere Bridge, which operates under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, allowing users to pay for passage, as a successful example. He also noted that in other countries, motorists pay to use specific roads to avoid congestion, suggesting that Tanzania could adopt similar strategies.

“Use this meeting to analyse and discuss effective ways to utilise these roads to boost the economy, reduce congestion during peak hours and benefit both the public and the government,” Mr Ulega urged. Furthermore, Mr Ulega instructed ministry officials to ensure value for money in the execution and oversight of various infrastructure projects, including roads, bridges, ferries, government buildings and airports.

“I direct you to continue supporting President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s noble vision by ensuring that the funds allocated for these projects are utilised effectively,” he said.

The minister also ordered the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) to intensify efforts to oversee the repair of road infrastructure damaged by the recent El Niño rains and Cyclone Hidaya.

Moreover, he directed the ministry’s leadership, in collaboration with the National Construction Council (NCC), to ensure that the empowerment of local contractors is carried out as planned to enhance their capabilities and economic benefits.
