UK supports 73,000 students in Coast Region’s flood affected areas

COAST REGION: THE United Kingdom High Commission, through its Shule Bora Programme, has provided learning items worth 40m/- which will benefit 73,000 students in flood affected areas in Rufiji and Kibiti districts in Coast Region.

Speaking during the handing over event in Kibaha Town on Friday, Representative of the UK High Commissioner, Ms Getrude Mapunda said that the UK Government will continue to support Tanzanian Government efforts in improving education in the country.

“The UK Government has been working hand in hand with the Tanzanian Government in ensuring friendly environment for studying in our schools. One of these initiatives is Shule Bora Programme that has been implemented in nine regions which has so far proved successfully,” she said.

Ms Mapunda said that apart from the stationery, the Programme has also provided 8 clean energy cooking stoves worth 29.6m/- which will be provided to 4 primary schools in Mkuranga District.

“The aim of providing these stoves is to support Tanzanian Government’s efforts of promoting the use of clean cooking energy to protect environment and protect people’s health,” she stated.

For her part, Virgine BrianShule Bora Team Programme said that a lot of achievement has been recorded as a result of implementation of the programme in the region.

Regional Education Officer (REO) Ms Sarah Mlaki said through the Programme – a total of 800 Primary School Teachers in the Region have received training skills and other 1, 961 teachers have received sustainable on job training skills on reading, counting and writing through clusters in Teachers Resources Centres.

Moreover, the acting Regional Administrative Secretary (RAS) Mr Shangwe Twamala took the tune to thank the UK Government for standing with the government in ensuring better education for Tanzanian children.

He said: “we are very grateful for this support and we want to ensure you that all the items will be used as intended without any problems.”
