UAE opens consulate in Zanzibar
MININSTER for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Dr Stergomena Tax has welcomed the opening of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) consulate in Zanzibar, saying it is a milestone in strengthening relations with the Middle East countries.
She made the remarks during the reception of the UAE new consul general to Zanzibar, Sheikh Saleh Ahmed Alhemeir at the Department of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation in Maisara.
Dr Tax said that the opening of the UAE consulate in Zanzibar is an indication of strong ties with Tanzania in various areas, including trade, economy and politics.
“It is a great opportunity having the consulate in Zanzibar…Zanzibaris and Tanzanians in general should use it to access various services that are beneficial to them and the country in general.
“It is also an opportunity to boost trade, because it facilitates consultations, dialogues and communication between Zanzibar traders and their UAE counterparts,” Dr Tax said.
She added that opening of the consulate is among achievements of the Sixth Phase Government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan and her Zanzibar counterpart Hussein Mwinyi to strengthen diplomatic reactions.
“In February this year during the Dubai EXPO Tanzania signed 37 agreements, which signify good relations between the countries,” she said.
Sheikh Alhemeir, on his part, expressed his pleasure to open a consulate in Zanzibar, and that the move was initiated by President Samia.
He said the UAE has good relations with Tanzania for 30 years and pledged to extend more support to Zanzibar and Tanzania.
“We are determined to continue supporting Tanzania and Zanzibar in all areas of development including the blue economy,” he said.
