Transport services resume in Geita

GEITA: Residents of Geita Municipal Council in Geita Region have expressed their joy and relief with the resumption of long-distance bus services, reconnecting Geita to multiple regions across the country.

The resumption of services comes five days after a temporary suspension was implemented as a precautionary measure by law enforcement and security agencies, aimed at addressing threats of violence in the country.

It is important to note that Geita Town, along with the commercial hub of Katoro Town Authority in Geita District, was among the areas that witnessed attempted unrest following the General Election held on last Wednesday.

Speaking to the ‘Daily News’ yesterday, the Chairperson of the Geita Central Bus Terminal, Mr Godfrey Kila, said the terminal hosts a total of seven long-distance transport companies, all of which have now resumed operations.

“We are very grateful that activities have returned to normal. The bus agents are back to work, the youth are safe, and operations are progressing smoothly because our Police Force and government have restored peace and stability,” he said.

He urged passengers not to have any fears regarding security, noting that official transport fares are being strictly observed and there has been no hike in ticket prices since fuel is available at regulated prices without any difficulties.

The Chairperson of the Bodaboda riders’ association in Geita Region, Mr Fred Fidel, acknowledged that although transport services have resumed, many operators were affected by the violence which led to a three-day restriction on movement.

He said the bodaboda leadership is implementing directives from the Police Force and Immigration Department to verify all motorcycle riders at every station as part of efforts to control illegal immigrants.

Mr Fidel added that since the transport sector involves many youths from diverse backgrounds, the leadership continues to emphasize the importance of avoiding involvement in activities that could disrupt peace and order.

Meanwhile, Chairperson of the Bajaji riders’ union in Geita Region, Mr Mussa Kisoke, said that since normal operations resumed, there have been no reports of security challenges to them in Geita town.

He noted that despite some damage caused to a few fuel stations in Geita town, directives from the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) regarding maintaining stable prices for petrol and diesel have been fully implemented.
