…TPDF leads security forces’ show of strength

ZANZIBAR: CLAD in full combat gear and marching in tight formation, defence and security units led by the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) turned the streets of Zanzibar into a vivid display of discipline, unity and resolve yesterday, as the Isles marked the climax of the 62nd anniversary of the Zanzibar Revolution.

The eight-kilometre march, from Mtoni area to Mnazi Mmoja grounds served both as a physical fitness exercise and a powerful symbol of the country’s enduring commitment to peace and stability.

A military helicopter provided spectacular aerial support as the forces advanced. Speakers from defence and security organs of both the Union and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar said the forces would continue strengthening cooperation to safeguard national security, ensure lasting peace and enable citizens to carry out their daily activities without fear or disruption.

The joint march, which coincided with the peak of the Revolution celebrations, underscored the close partnership among the forces and their shared resolve to confront crime and emerging security threats in the national interest.

Speaking after the event, TPDF Commander of the Nyuki Brigade in Zanzibar, Major General Said Khamis Said, said peace and security are indispensable, as they provide the foundation for productivity and allow the government to deliver development, the core objective of the 1964 Revolution that ushered in Zanzibar’s self-rule.

“The defence and security organs have chosen to commemorate the anniversary in a special way to demonstrate their readiness, resilience and capability to protect peace, citizens and their property,” he said.

Major General Said, who is also Chairperson of the Zanzibar Security and Defence Committee, explained that the march was part of routine training aimed at enhancing physical and mental fitness while reinforcing military discipline.

He added that the exercise also highlighted the strong cooperation between Union/Zanzibar security organs in executing their national duties.

The committee’s ViceChairperson and Zanzibar Police Commissioner, (CP) Kombo Khamis Kombo, described January 12 as a historic and meaningful day for Zanzibaris, marking the Revolution that brought freedom, peace and development.

“This year, we decided to commemorate this important day in a unique way, by marching together as defence and security forces, as a clear demonstration of our unity,” he said.

CP Kombo noted that the joint exercise reflected seamless collaboration among security organs in fulfilling government responsibilities, particularly in addressing security challenges.

He said Zanzibar ended the previous year in a favourable security situation, with crime rates declining, and has entered the new year with renewed strategies to further strengthen safety.

He pledged continued cooperation among the forces to address remaining challenges and ensure Zanzibar remains safe for residents and visitors alike.

Commissioner Kombo also urged citizens to shun criminal activities, warning that crime brings harm to individuals, families and society.

“Engaging in crime only leads to trouble. Whether you are a youth or a parent, breaking the law has consequences, the law will take its course,” he said.

Meanwhile, Commander of the Zanzibar Anti-Smuggling Unit (KMKM), Commodore Azana Hassan Msingiri, said the march honoured the January 12, 1964 Revolution and reinforced unity among defence forces in Unguja and Pemba.

He said the Revolution laid a strong foundation for peace and security, placing responsibility on both leaders and citizens to defend and preserve its gains for present and future generations.

Commodore Msingiri reaffirmed the armed forces’ commitment to their oath to protect the Revolution and national security with full strength and unity.

He commended Zanzibar President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr Hussein Mwinyi, and pledged continued enhancement of cooperation to maintain security on land and at sea.

“We will ensure our islands remain safe, allowing citizens to carry out their activities in peace and tranquillity, because peace is the foundation of our nation’s development,” he said.

The march involved six defence and security units and was accompanied by coordinated physical fitness drills, adding colour and spectacle to the Revolution anniversary celebrations.
