TPDC connects cooking gas to over 3,000 Tanzanians

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) has continued to support the National Clean Cooking Energy Strategy, with more than 3,000 Tanzanians now connected to affordable natural gas cooking systems.
This was revealed today, November 18, 2025, in Dar es Salaam by the Acting Director of Oil and Natural Gas Business at TPDC, Engineer Emmanuel Gilbert, during an interview on ITV’s “Kumekucha” program. The appearance is part of ongoing efforts to promote the use of clean cooking energy and raise public awareness through communication campaigns.
“Given that the National Clean Cooking Energy Strategy is a key tool for achieving the country’s goal of ensuring citizens cook using clean, safe, and environmentally friendly energy, we at TPDC have continued to ensure that people adopt clean cooking energy. We have connected approximately 3,000 households to natural gas systems, which are more affordable and reliably available in Dar es Salaam, Lindi, and Mtwara,” Gilbert explained.
He added, “As we implement this major clean cooking initiative, we are also aligning with international agreements aimed at combating climate change by reducing carbon emissions. The government’s goal is for 80% of Tanzanians to use clean cooking energy by the year 2034.”

Gilbert further noted that the expansion of natural gas distribution aims to reach more citizens in both urban and rural areas, including those with low incomes. He emphasized that TPDC continues to collaborate with stakeholders involved in distributing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders in rural areas, where cylinder-filling meters allow customers to purchase gas by the kilogram, making clean energy more affordable.
He stated that the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, is committed to educating the public on the benefits of clean cooking energy while engaging stakeholders to ensure the availability of clean energy equipment at affordable prices, especially in rural communities.
Additionally, he urged citizens to adopt clean cooking energy and abandon unsafe fuels, noting that the National Clean Cooking Energy Strategy aims to reduce respiratory diseases caused by smoke, protect forests, and create economic opportunities through investments in clean cooking technologies and equipment.
