DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania Olympic Committee (TOC) election, originally scheduled for December 14th, 2024, has been postponed to December 28, 2024.
TOC SecretaryGeneral, Filbert Bayi, announced the delay during a statement in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday. He explained that the postponement was necessary due to pending financial plans from Olympic Solidarity, which is funding the election along with four other major meetings.
These include sessions for the Tanzania Olympians Association (TOA), the Olympic Commission and the General Meeting of the Secretary Generals of the federations.
“There are still some financial procedures that need to be finalised, but we expect everything to be in place shortly,” Bayi said.
“Typically, our activities are managed by Olympic Solidarity, which also funds various training programmes for our members.”
The TOC Election Commission Chairman, Ibrahim Mkwawa, clarified that the screening for candidates from Mainland Tanzania will take place on December 4th, 2024, while Zanzibar candidates will undergo screening on December 6th, 2024.
The list of selected candidates will be announced on December 7th, 2024. Campaigns will run from December 12th to 27th, 2024, with any objections addressed by December 3rd, 2024.

Several candidates have emerged to contest for various positions in the upcoming election, which will be held in Dodoma. Among those running for the presidency is the current ViceChairman, Henry Tandau.
Other presidential hopefuls include the Njombe Regional Commissioner, Anthony Mtaka, Nasra Juma Mohammed and Michael Washa.
Other positions up for election include VicePresident and 10 general members. Half of the members will be from Zanzibar, and half from mainland Tanzania, with a requirement for two women from each side.
The position of Secretary-General, currently held by Filbert Bayi, will not be contested as Bayi has opted not to seek re-election. Instead, the Secretary-General position will be hired following amendments to the TOC constitution.
In a significant change, the Treasurer’s role, previously elected, will now also be a hired position under the new structure.
