TGU, R&A donate 50 golf sets to boost junior development

DAR ES SALAAM: IN a landmark move to boost grassroots sports, the Tanzania Golf Union (TGU), in collaboration with The R&A, officially handed over 50 sets of junior golf equipment to the newly formed National Junior Golf Committee.

The event, held yesterday at the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) Lugalo Golf Course in Dar es Salaam, was part of the ongoing National Golf Development Programme under the theme “Golf for All.”

Organised by TGU in partnership with The R&A—the global governing body responsible for the promotion and development of golf outside the United States, the ceremony marked a pivotal moment in the country’s efforts to expand youth participation in the sport.

TGU Chairman Gilman Kasiga presided over the handover, presenting the equipment to committee representatives Anita Siwale and Maryanne Mugo.

“Today, we are not just handing over golf equipment, we are laying the foundation for a stronger, more inclusive future for Tanzanian golf,” said Kasiga.

“This moment reflects our collective commitment to growing the game at the grassroots level, while fostering transparency and stakeholder engagement.”

The donation includes 50 complete junior golf sets for children aged 3 to 14, which will be used in structured training sessions, youth competitions and nationwide development programmes coordinated by the National Junior Golf Committee.

The seven-member committee, officially launched during the event, will lead efforts to identify, nurture, and advise TGU on the development of junior golf talent across the country.

In addition to Siwale and Mugo, other members include Enock Magile, Ken Mbaya, Danstan Kolimba, Madina Iddi, and Johnson John.

Kasiga acknowledged the indispensable role of The R&A in supporting Tanzania’s golf development journey.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to The R&A for this strategic contribution, which reflects our shared vision of making golf accessible and inclusive for all,” he noted.

The “Golf for All” initiative is designed to create equal opportunities for young golfers from all regions of Tanzania, regardless of background or location, by providing access to quality equipment and structured coaching.

TGU emphasised that this milestone marks the beginning of a new chapter in Tanzanian golf, with growing momentum for further development and international recognition.

“We are optimistic that these achievements will inspire even more partnerships as we strive to elevate the game of golf to international standards right here in Tanzania,” Kasiga concluded.

Speaking during the ceremony, Siwale and Mugo expressed their gratitude to TGU for entrusting them with the mandate to support junior golf development and pledged full cooperation.

“We are ready for the big task ahead,” said Siwale. “However, we appeal to companies, institutions and sports stakeholders to support the establishment of golf infrastructure—at least one facility per region—to ensure a sustainable development programme.”

Mugo added, “Golf is an important sport for youth development especially discipline. It offers international exposure and scholarship opportunities for young talent.”
