TGU bring Coastal Zone Inter-Club golf to life

DAR ES SALAAM: COAST Zone Inter-Club Golf Competition is set to bounce back into life this year as three clubs prepare to battle it out for the top honour.

The national-level competition is scheduled to tee off at the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) Lugalo Golf Club course of Dar es Salaam on March 9th this year.

Host club Captain Japhet Masai hinted that preparation is in top gear for the CRDB Banksponsored event. Masai said the long-day 18- hole epic showdown brings together three golf clubs from Dar es Salaam and Morogoro.

He named the trio as Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club (DGC), Morogoro Gymkhana Club and hosts Lugalo. Masai said clubs will compete in the match play, stroke play and batter ball mode.

He explained that the competition became dull in recent years, but the current effort done by the Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) has successfully brought back to life the forgotten tournaments, including the Coast Zone InterClub Championship.

Another tournament that has not been played for over five years, but was revived this year is the Northern Zone Golf tournament that ended recently at the TPC Moshi, in Kilimanjaro region two weeks ago.

The Lugalo Captain added that the battle would include pairs, single and club winners’ categories. Among others, the competition aims to cement friendship and unity between clubs and develop the game in Tanzania.

The big challenge faced by Dar es Salaam players, is that most of them are members of Dar-based clubs, but they will now have to choose a home club to represent.

This means the battle is going to be even tougher since most of the players know each other well. Last year, Dar duo Lugalo and DGC competed with each other at the club friendship tournament which saw Lugalo beat their counterpart by 14 to nine matches to win the title.

Following the successful event, TGU Chairman Gilman Kasiga, who was the chief guest during the presentation ceremony hailed the two Dar es Salaam clubs for their worthy initiative.

Kasiga promised to upgrade the event and reach the national level status by involving other clubs in the country and has now fulfilled his promise.
