TEITI report to unveil Tanzania’s gains in extractive industry

DODOMA: A comprehensive report disclosing what the country has gained so far in the extractive industry is expected to be published in June this year, the Tanzania Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (TEITI) has revealed.
The organisation is mandated to disclose payments and revenues from companies in the mining, oil and gas sectors to the government annually.
The announcement was made in Dodoma recently by TEITI Committee Chairperson, Mr Ludovick Utouh, in a speech read on his behalf by Acting Manager for Transparency and Accountability at TEITI, Mr Erick Ketagory, during a special seminar aimed at promoting the use of the watchdog’s reports.
The seminar was by members of the Tanzania Association of the Blind from various districts in the Dodoma Region.
According to Mr Ketagory, so far, TEITI has released 14 reports and is currently preparing the 15th report, covering the period from July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023. The 16th report is expected to be made public in June.
To date, Tanzania has published 14 reports covering the period from July 1, 2008, to June 30, 2022. These reports compare payments made by extractive companies with the revenues received by the government.
The 14th TEITI report, which aligns with the global Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) standards, revealed that the mining sector contributed 80.21 per cent of all government revenues from the extractive industries in the 2021/22 financial year. He further stated that TEITI has been producing special Braille reports to ensure that visually impaired citizens can also access crucial information regarding the country’s extractive sector.
“The country’s natural resources, including minerals, oil and gas, belong to all citizens. It is, therefore, crucial that our reports are available in Braille so that everyone has the opportunity to access and understand data from the extractive industry and question how these resources benefit the nation,” he added.
Reading a speech on behalf of TEITI Executive Secretary Ms Mariam Mgaya, Acting Head of ICT and Data at TEITI, Mr Bakari Birika, said the seminar provided participants with insights into TEITI’s mandate and the effective use of its reports. “Our role as TEITI is to build citizens’ capacity in utilising data from our reports.
This seminar is part of our efforts to ensure that all groups, including people with disabilities, can participate in discussions on the management of the country’s extractive resources,” Mr Birika stated.
He further noted that TEITI was also planning to make public the contracts signed between the government and extractive companies and establish a register of beneficial owners in the mining, oil and gas sectors.
