TCRA in renewed drive to promote TZ’s identity in cyberspace

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) will launch a National Awareness Campaign on the Country Code Domain Name on websites and emails to promote the Country’s identity in Cyberspace and enhance Safe Digital practices, supporting the growth of the digital economy.
TCRA Director General Dr Jabiri Bakari said in Dar es Salaam yesterday that TCRA will educate, motivate and empower Tanzanians to use the .tz domain name and position it as the country’s credible & trusted digital name.
He explained that the objective of the 12-month campaign to be launched this year is to propagate and increase Tanzanians’ understanding of domain names and their importance, and promote their registration. Users will be encouraged to choose ‘dot tz’ as their official on-line identity.
TCRA will also educate the public on cybersecurity, authenticity and trust when using official domain names, he added. Domain names are unique identifiers of Internet resources such as websites, for example, TCRA’s: www. tcra.go.tz. Dr Bakari explained that the increased adoption of the Tanzania domain name will strengthen the country’s digital footprint, enhance efficiency while enabling local communication easily transferred locally.
The rapid growth of the digital economy in Tanzania has increased the need for individuals, businesses and institutions to establish a trusted and visible online presence.

“As more services shift to digital platforms, ranging from e-commerce and digital payments to government services, the importance of owning a verified and secure domain name has become more critical than ever,” Dr Bakari said.
Despite this growth, the adoption of .tz domain names remains relatively low compared to the increasing number of online users and businesses. There were 35,621 ‘dot tz’ domain names in September 2025.
They increased by 24.5 per cent, from 28,601 in 2023. Many enterprises operate solely on social media pages, free web domains, or shared platforms, which limits their credibility, reduces online security, and weakens the authenticity of their digital identity.
This has contributed to challenges such as impersonation, misinformation, brand misuse, cyber fraud and limited visibility of Tanzanian content online. Encouraging businesses, startups, creators and public entities to adopt .tz supports national goals related to digital transformation, local content generation, data localisation and cybersecurity.
The campaign will promote professionalism, authenticity and national pride in the digital space, where local content creators and ICT innovators cherish direct benefit as TCRA offers free communication innovators who previous had to pay substantial amounts of money to test their innovative ICT Solutions.
Owning a Tanzania Domain Name facilitates clients’ easy access to an organization’s services, demonstrates professionalism, and creates branding opportunities, as well as user trust and confidence in a business or service.
