TASAC warns fishers, Marine transporters of possible marine accidents to strong winds

Fishers and small scale water ways transporters have been told to be vigilant and closely follow weather information update released by the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) before continuing with sailing activities.

DAR ES SALAAM: Fishers and small scale water ways transporters have been told to be vigilant and closely follow weather information update released by the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) before continuing with sailing activities.

This aims at averting probable marine accidents due to strong winds and waves.

The Directive Issued in press statement released by the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC) following the TMA’s weather forecast reports warning on the possible occurrences of strong winds and waves which may adversely affect human activities in the Indian Ocean and in Lake Tanganyika.

“TASAC wishes to inform fishermen, water ways transporters and all other stakeholders involved in economic activities within the country’s largest Water bodies to closely monitor and follow the weatherman’s updates and take all necessary precautionary measures for their safety,” The press statement by TASAC read in Parts
The press statement went on to elaborate that in the next three days starting from September 1 2024 that anticipated strong winds might lead to heavy waves, posing to affecting water ways infrastructures, marine vessels and hence, wreak havoc to sailors.

Areas expected to be affected according to TASAC includes the southern parts of the Indian Ocean which covers Mtwara and Lindi regions, Northern Parts of the same ocean covering Dar es Salaam and Tanga regions are also to remain on alert. Also the Islands of Mafia, Pemba and Unguja are told to take precautions.

On the other part, TASAC issued directives on fishers, water bodies transporters and economic ativities on the beaches of Lake Tanganyika to take cautionary measures as well. They include those in Katavi and Rukwa regions where the weathermen’s report predicted the same possible catastrophe born conditions.

“To avert potential deadly marine accident posing danger to Fishermen, vessel operators and passengers TASAC calls for all concerned people to obey to TMA’s reports until directed otherwise. In case of any emergency, contact the toll free 0800110101 to a search and rescue coordination center,” the press statement added.
