Tanzania’s health insurance includes kidney, heart diseases in its coverage
DAR ES SALAAM: In a move aimed at ensuring every Tanzanian has access to quality healthcare, the government, through the Universal Health Insurance Scheme, has pledged to address all challenges currently facing the health insurance system, including the exclusion of certain chronic diseases from coverage.
Speaking today, September 27, 2025, during the Cafetalk forum held in Dar es Salaam, the Secretary General of the CCM Parents’ Wing, Ally Hapi, said the government under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan has made significant strides in improving citizens’ lives, particularly in the health sector.
“Within the first 100 days of President Dr Samia’s new term, the government will have completed the implementation process of the Universal Health Insurance Scheme,” he said.
He explained that the new scheme will address all the shortcomings of the current health insurance packages.
Under this new plan, treatment for all major illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, kidney failure, and diabetes—which were previously excluded from insurance coverage, will now be fully funded by the government.
“All treatment costs for these serious diseases will be covered by the Government through this new insurance, to ensure that no Tanzanian is denied care due to financial constraints,” Hapi emphasized.
This initiative is being hailed as one of the major achievements of the Sixth Phase Government, aiming to deliver fair, inclusive, and life-changing healthcare services for all citizens.
