Tanzania’s environmental bodies sign an agreement to operate closely, digitally

DAR ES SALAAM: THE National Environmental Management Council (NEMC) and the Zanzibar Environmental Management Authority (ZEMA) have reached an agreement to strengthen their cooperation in the management and conservation of the environment in the country.
The agreement was reached following a two-day meeting held on October 7 and 8, 2025, where board members and experts from both institutions gathered to discuss and exchange experiences on the implementation of their duties.
The two institutions said through the meeting, they have laid a solid foundation for cooperation in various areas, including the use of digital technology in environmental management, monitoring the implementation of environmental laws and regulations, as well as enhancing regular communication between the two parties.
Additionally, they agreed to ensure that all projects carried out in Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar comply with the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process.

The Chairman of the NEMC Board, Engineer Mwanasha Tumbo, said the cooperation is an important step towards implementing the National Development Vision 2020/2050, which identifies the environment as one of the key pillars of the country’s development.
“This collaboration will increase efficiency in operations and help achieve national goals for environmental conservation for the benefit of citizens and future generations,” Engineer Tumbo said.
On her part, the Chairperson of the ZEMA Board, Asha Ali Khatib, said the meeting provided an opportunity for experts from both sides to learn from each other and also generate new approaches to improve performance.
She added that this cooperation will facilitate policy and implementation alignment on environmental issues between the Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar.
