Tanzania’s electrification exercise surges

DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government has reported remarkable progress in its nationwide electrification exercise targeting strategic areas such as small-scale mining zones, fishing communities, industrial zones, and other economically active areas to enhance productivity and development.
Deputy Minister for Energy, Judith Kapinga, made the announcement today, May 14, 2025, during the Parliament session in Dodoma, while responding to a question from Mwibara MP, Charles Kaijage, who inquired about the government’s plans to supply electricity to fishing areas to boost local economic activities.
“Mr. Deputy Speaker, this strategic electrification project has so far reached over 300 locations, including health centers and water wells in communities providing essential services,” said Kapinga.
In a related response, Kapinga addressed a question from Igunga MP, Nicholas Ngassa, who asked when the government would begin distributing electricity to hamlets in Igunga Constituency. She stated that Igunga has 337 hamlets, of which 95 have already been connected to electricity.

She further explained that in 15 hamlets, contractors are currently implementing projects under Phase II A of the Rural Electrification Project (HEP IIA), while 69 hamlets are in the tendering stage under Phase II B (HEP IIB).
Deputy Minister Kapinga emphasized that the government, through the Rural Energy Agency (REA), will continue to allocate funds to ensure the remaining 158 hamlets in Igunga also receive electricity.
These initiatives form part of the government’s broader strategy to ensure that electricity access is extended to all Tanzanians,
