DAR ES SALAAM: A Tanzanian student, Prisha Chheda, from Aga Khan Mzizima Secondary School in Dar es Salaam is among five African students who have secured a prestigious opportunity to participate in an environmental expedition to Antarctica.

Prisha has joined other three students from South Africa and one from Ghana on the trip that commenced on December 13 and is expected to be concluded today.

According to a statement released by Students in Antarctica, Prisha and other winners were chosen from a highly competitive pool of candidates based on their passion for environmental conservation and their commitment to addressing climate change.

The selected students include Prisha Chheda – Aga Khan Mzizima Secondary School, Tanzania, L’chelle Bester – Curro Hillcrest High School, Durban, South Africa, Mukondi Sinugo – Uitsig High School, Gauteng, South Africa, Alessandro Barbieri – Simon’s Town High School, Cape Town, South Africa.

The statements highlight that the expedition aims to provide students with first-hand exposure to the impacts of climate change on one of the planet’s most vulnerable ecosystems.

“The opportunity to travel to Antarctica is a dream come true for these students. This expedition will not only reveal the challenges our planet faces but also equip them with the tools to become future leaders in environmental advocacy,” reads the statement.

During the expedition, students will work closely with renowned environmentalists and pioneering explorer Riaan Manser, gaining valuable insights into global environmental challenges while contributing to on-going research.

The students will also engage in field research to study the effects of climate change, learn from leading environmental experts and witness the dramatic impacts of global warming on Antarctica’s fragile ecosystem.

The participants will document their journey through blogs, social media updates and community presentations to share their findings and experiences with a broader audience.

The expedition is part of Riaan Manser’s initiative to inspire and empower young environmental leaders by providing transformative experiences that foster a deeper commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

“This programme aims to equip the next generation with the knowledge and tools needed to protect our planet, fostering a stronger commitment to sustainable practices,” reads part of the statement.
