Tanzanian golfers fall short at home open
ARUSHA: TANZANIAN golfers fell short as Kenya’s Mercy Nyanchama clinched the Tanzania Ladies Golf Open title over the weekend at Arusha Gymkhana Club (AGC).
Nyanchama, representing Golf Park, Nairobi, carded a total score of +17 after three rounds to secure the win, thwarting the hopes of top Tanzanian contenders.
The tournament, organised by the Tanzania Ladies Golf Union (TLGU), saw Nyanchama overtake Tanzanian golfer Hawa Wanyeche, who led after the first round.
Hawa Wanyeche, from the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) Lugalo Golf Club, struggled in the final rounds, finishing in third place with a total score of +25.
Despite an impressive start with a score of 76 in the first round, Wanyeche’s performance faltered as the tournament progressed.
Madina Iddi, representing the host AGC and fresh from recent victories in Uganda and Zambia finished in second place with a score of +19.
Iddi improved throughout the tournament, carding the best round of 75 on the final day, but fell short of Nyanchama’s total.

Neema Olomi, a favorite among local golfers, ended in fourth place with a score of +32.
Defending champion Vicky Elias, also from TPDF Lugalo, could not replicate her previous success and finished fifth with a score of +43.
Nyanchama’s triumph highlights a missed opportunity for Tanzanian golfers to assert their dominance in the regional tournament.
