Tanzanian Dr Bahati Sanga appointed Senior Director, Corporate IT at AfDB
The African Development Bank (AfDB) has appointed Dr Bahati Sanga, a Tanzanian, as the new Senior Director, Corporate Information Technology Services Department/Chief Information Officer (CIO) from July 1, 2025.
Dr Sanga’s extensive experience and leadership in digital transformation and IT solutions were cited as key factors in his selection.
Dr Sanga has worked at the AfDB since 2010 and has held several key positions, demonstrating his deep expertise in the field. He has over 25 years of experience in organizational reforms, strategy design, and the execution of digital solutions within financial and development institutions.
Before his official appointment, Dr Sanga served in an acting capacity as Senior Director and CIO since April 2025 where he also managed the Business Solutions Division, overseeing the delivery of digital solutions for the Bank’s operations, finance, and corporate services.
From January 2022 to January 2024, as Acting Director and CIO, he led the implementation of a Digital Action Plan that introduced advanced technology solutions.
This included the successful integration of artificial intelligence (AI), robotic process automation, and cloud-based disaster recovery services, which significantly improved operational efficiency in financial management and lending programs.
Earlier in his career at the Bank, Dr Sanga served as the Division Manager for Operations and Regional IT Coordination (2018-2024) and the Division Manager for Client Services (2013-2018), where he spearheaded the modernization and standardization of service delivery.
AfDB Group President, Dr Akinwumi A. Adesina, expressed his full confidence in Dr Sanga, noting his “wealth of experience in digital finance and innovative IT solutions.”
Dr Adesina praised Sanga’s track record of implementing groundbreaking technological solutions that have enhanced the Bank’s operational efficiency. He said he is optimistic that Dr Sanga’s strategic and diplomatic skills will be crucial in driving the Digital Ambition 2030 plan.
In response to his appointment, Dr Sanga stated he was “humbled and honoured” to be entrusted with the role.
He said he was looking forward to continuing the implementation of the Digital Ambition 2030, a strategy focused on modernizing the Bank’s IT capabilities to support its Ten-Year Strategy.
