Tanzania urges NAM members to uphold solidarity

KAMPALA: TANZANIA has the Non-Aligned Movement’s member countries to uphold solidarity and unity in international discussions, especially when defending the interests of developing nations.

The call was made by Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Cosato Chumi, during the ongoing NAM Conference in Kampala, Uganda, where he further reiterated Tanzania’s commitment to continue working closely with other member states to safeguard and promote the shared interests of the movement.

THE Deputy Minister leads the Tanzanian delegation participating in the 19th Mid-Term Ministerial Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), taking place in Kampala, Uganda.

The two-day meeting that began on Wednesday, October 15 to 16 was preceded by an experts’ meeting held from October 13–14, 2025.

The discussions at the NAM conference focus on setting strategies to address political, economic, and social challenges facing member states in the current global context.

This conference was officiated by the President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, who emphasized the importance of solidarity, cooperation, and advocacy for the interests of developing countries within the international system.

Speaking at the conference, Mr Chumi urged NAM member countries to uphold solidarity and unity in international discussions, especially in defending the interests of developing nations.

He further reiterated Tanzania’s commitment to continue working closely with other member states to safeguard and promote the shared interests of the movement.

The conference is expected to adopt the Kampala Final Declaration and a Statement on Palestine, as part of the outcomes aimed at strengthening NAM’s role in global affairs.

The Non-Aligned Movement, which has 120 member states, has its origins in what has been referred to as the first large-scale Asian–African or Afro–Asian Conference, held on 18th–24th April, 1955.

It is popularly known as the Bandung Conference (taking on the name of the city where it was held – Bandung, Indonesia).
