Tanzania to incorporate summit of the future inputs in Vision 2050

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA has assured the United Nations (UN) that it will incorporate inputs of the Summit of the Future to the forthcoming National Development Vision 2050 in efforts of ensuring the national aspirations reflect global objectives on sustainability and inclusivity.

The Summit of the Future is a high-level event which will be held on September 22 and 23 this year at the UN’s Headquarter in New York, United States of America (USA) involving world leaders to forge a new international consensus on how they deliver a better present and safeguards the future.

In that regard, the UN-Tanzania has been collaborating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation and the Ministry of State, President’s Office (Planning and Investment) to undertake various consultation events intended to collect recommendations from Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and citizens on the global future they want.

Speaking during the wrap up consultation event of the Summit of the Future which was held at the UN-Tanzania’s Headquarter on Friday in Dar es Salaam, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation’s Director of the Department of Multilateral Cooperation, Ambassador Noel Kaganda said the global high level meeting comes at the right time when Tanzania is preparing the Vision 2050, making easier for its recommendations to be included.

The wrap consultation event was the climax gathering that attracted  representative from all groups including CSOs, People With Disabilities (PWDs), youth and citizens at large in which a special report was handled over to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation and the Ministry of  State, President’s Office (Planning and Investment).

“The alignment between the Summit of the Future’s consultations and the Tanzania Development Vision 2050’s process offer us a unique opportunity to harmonize our national goals with global broader agenda,” Amb Kaganda said.

He mentioned improvement of education, construction of economic infrastructure, upgrade of health services and environmental sustainability as some of the key inputs from the Summit of the Future’s consultation events in which the government will incorporate them to the Vision 2050.

Furthermore, he noted that the consultation events have stressed on the importance of further creating a transparent and accountable government.

Amb Kaganda commended the UN Tanzania for organizing the multi-stakeholders consultation events which give birth to the report to be presented to the Summit of the Future that is only two weeks away.

Head of the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in Tanzania, Ms Shabnam Mallick appreciated the recommendations made by the CSOs including the youth led institutions and all participants.

She pledged that the UN will keep on ensuring Tanzanians’ voices are heard.

Ms Mallick said the UN Tanzania used an inclusive approach which involves all voices from both Mainland and Zanzibar.

In an interview with the Daily News, Executive Director of the UN Associations Tanzania, Mr Ibrahim Bakari said ever since the consultation events started in May to the final gathering on September 6 this year UN Tanzania brought together about 500 participants who aired their views on the future world they dream.

Mr Bakari said the conclusion of the Summit of the Future in September 23 will result in to establishment of the Pact of the Future, a binding document to be ratified by nations worldwide as basis for building the common future.

Meanwhile, Youth Advisory Member at the United Nations Population Fund for Population Activities’s (UNFPA ), Ms Caryn Khan called upon the Summit of the Future to strengthen youth involvement in global governance in bid of ensuring world plans meet their aspirations.

Also, she urged global leaders to come up with interventions which will accelerate youth’s equitable access to digital opportunities which are vital in addressing the unemployment challenge and attaining inclusive sustainable development.
