Tanzania, Sweden boost economic ties

ZIMBABWE: TANZANIA and Sweden have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening diplomatic cooperation, focusing on priority areas including politics, economy, clean energy and the wellbeing of citizens.

The two countries deepened their ties following bilateral talks between Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo and Sweden’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ms Maria Stenergard, held on the sidelines of the 22nd AfricaNordic Foreign Affairs Ministers’ meeting in Zimbabwe, over the weekend.

Ambassador Kombo expressed gratitude to Sweden for its unwavering support for Tanzania’s development across sectors such as education, health, energy, good governance and social development.

He emphasised that Tanzania is committed to fostering friendly collaboration for the mutual development of both countries. He also invited Swedish investors to explore opportunities in Tanzania, particularly in renewable energy, Information Communication Technology (ICT), agriculture, industries and tourism.

Amb Kombo highlighted Tanzania’s ambitious goal of ensuring 85 per cent energy accessibility by 2025, calling on partners to collaborate in sustainable and clean energy projects to achieve this target.

For her part, Ms Stenergard lauded Tanzania for maintaining peace and good governance while promoting inclusive economic policies.

She described Tanzania as a beacon of peace and development in the Eastern Africa region and reaffirmed Sweden’s commitment to further collaborate with the country in areas of democracy, social development and alternative energy projects.

Ms Stenergard also noted that Swedish companies are keen to invest in Tanzania, particularly in infrastructure, minerals, transport and healthcare. Both leaders agreed to establish a joint political and economic advisory system, which will serve as the foundation for strategic cooperation aimed at promoting sustainable development for the citizens of both nations.
