Tanzania secures avocado market in China

The Ministry of Agriculture has finalized bilateral procedures with China that will enable Tanzania to access the Asian economic powerhouse’s avocado market

DAR ES SALAAM: The Ministry of Agriculture has finalized bilateral procedures with China, an initiative that will enable Tanzania to access the Asian economic powerhouse’s avocado market.

After concluding the deal, the Ministry used its social media accounts to inform avocado farmers and exporters about the opportunity.

According to the Ministry, avocado producers in the country have been permitted to export and trade in China since August 14, 2024.

To export the produce, the Ministry advised that exporters must be registered with the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) through the Tanzania Plant Health and Pesticides Authority (TPHPA) and meet the standards set by Chinese authorities for the permitted varieties: Hass, Fuerte, and Pinkerton.

Other requirements include that production farms, packhouses, and fumigation companies must register with the Tanzania Plant Health and Pesticides Authority (TPHPA) and obtain a traceability code for exporter identification.

Additionally, all farms registered to export avocados to China must adhere to best agricultural practices and integrated pest management to control quarantine pests such as fruit flies, false codling moths, and mealybugs.

Furthermore, the Ministry stated that processing, packaging, storage, and transportation must comply with all the requirements and procedures outlined in the protocol signed between the two countries.
