Tanzania reaps fortune in horticulture, agribusiness

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA has made great strides in the horticulture sector by producing over 8.4m tonnes in 2023/24 from 1.1m tonnes in 2003/04.
The Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (Policy, Parliament and Coordination), Dr Jim Yonazi, made the statement when launching a Horti Logistica Africa Council in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday, during the General Conference on Agriculture and Agribusiness for Horticultural Crops.
Additionally, Dr Yonazi noted that export earnings from the sector have increased from 64m US dollars to over 569m US dollars.

According to the PS, the achievements are the result of the collective efforts of farmers, entrepreneurs, processors, and all stakeholders driving the vital sector of the national economy.

Moreover, he said that the government continues to improve the enabling environment for business, investment, and infrastructure to ensure that horticulture continues to shine on the global stage.
“The government is determined to make the horticulture sector a key engine of economic transformation. Through inclusive policies, investment in infrastructure, and public–private partnerships, we will ensure that the sector continues to grow rapidly and attract more investors,” he stated.
He further said that policy reforms, the strengthening of the Tanzania Agricultural Development Bank (TADB), construction of cold storage facilities, and improvements of ports and airports all reflect the government’s strong commitment to developing horticulture as a pillar of employment, income, and the national economy.
