DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA’S meat exports have risen by 8.1 per cent, driven by increased global marketing efforts that successfully enhanced the visibility and demand for the country’s high-quality meat products globally.

The meat exports for the first quarter of this fiscal year increased to 2,960.44 tonnes compared to 2,737.54 tonnes in the similar period last year while the value of the meat also rose to 13.14 million US dollars against 11.29 million US dollars.

“This robust performance reflects not only the expanding global demand for Tanzanian meat but also the ongoing efforts to enhance the quality and competitiveness of the country’s products in international markets,” said Mr Chassama.

Additionally, he said that internally, the government’s focus on improving infrastructure, streamlining trade regulations and supporting local producers has been crucial in driving the sector’s success.

The efforts have not only boosted the competitiveness of the country’s meat in global markets but also increased confidence among international buyers, leading to higher export volumes and greater revenue.

He added that new investments in the industry have resulted in an increase in the number of accredited slaughterhouses for exports from six to seven.

Mr Chassama said the leading destinations for the country’s meat exports from July to September 2023/24 remained unchanged, with Qatar, Oman and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) continuing as the top three importers.

Qatar remains the largest buyer, controlling 31.7 per cent of the market share of Tanzania’s meat exports, followed by Oman at 28.1 per cent and the UAE at 16.2 per cent.

In comparison, during the same period in 2022/23, Qatar accounted for 33.8 per cent, Oman 27.8 per cent and the UAE 12.5 per cent.

Moreover, goat meat remains the leading product in the country’s meat export sector, accounting for 59.2 per cent of total meat exports in the first quarter of the 2024/25 fiscal year, a slight increase from 58.6per cent in 2023/24.
