Tanzania, Malawi commissions team on child protection

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance (CHRAGG) has held a bilateral meeting with the Malawi National Children’s Commission (MNCC) as part of efforts to strengthen collaboration on the protection and promotion of children’s rights.

The meeting took place at CHRAGG’s headquarters in Dar es Salaam, hosted by Commissioner Nyanda Shuli, alongside his delegation and visiting officials from Malawi.

Discussions between the two commissions focused on enhancing cooperation and deepening relations, particularly in the area of defending and safeguarding children’s rights.

Speaking during the meeting, Commissioner Shuli informed the MNCC delegation that CHRAGG handles a wide range of human rights issues, including those specifically affecting children.

He further explained the Commission’s role in investigating child rights violations and monitoring the welfare of children in correctional facilities and juvenile rehabilitation schools.

Commissioner Shuli also provided a briefing on CHRAGG’s initiatives to establish human rights clubs in primary and secondary schools, as well as higher learning institutions.

He said that the Commission regularly monitors these clubs to ensure they are active and impactful.

Equally, he outlined how CHRAGG runs various campaigns and commemorative events to raise awareness about child rights protection, including Africa Child Day, through public forums, mass media (radio, television, newspapers) and social media platforms.

He also described the Commission’s work in conducting research on child rights issues and its involvement in reviewing policies and laws that affect children. In response, Commissioner of the Malawi National Children’s Commission, Ms Lyka Mtambo Milanzi, expressed gratitude to CHRAGG for the warm hospitality extended to her and her delegation.

She affirmed her commitment to continuing the collaboration between the two commissions. Commissioner Lyka said that the purpose of their visit to Tanzania was to learn from CHRAGG’s experience and best practices, following the recent establishment of MNCC in September 2024.

The MNCC delegation was led by Commissioner Lyka, accompanied by other senior officers from the Commission.
