Tanzania makes significant strides in disaster preparedness

DAR ES SALAAM: IN its efforts to address disaster-related challenges, the Tanzanian government has made significant strides by establishing effective systems, policies, and strategies aimed at prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. These efforts are intended to enhance the safety and well-being of its citizens.
This was stated today in Dar es Salaam by Dr. Jim James Yonazi, the Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office – Policy, Parliament, and Coordination, during the closing ceremony of a Training of Trainers program on disaster risk management. The training was organized by the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) in collaboration with the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), the Turkish Red Crescent, and Tanzania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation.

He emphasized the importance of international cooperation in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), as well as the shared commitment to building strong and resilient communities.

“Empowering community leaders is essential, as they are the first responders during disasters. They play a key role in coordinating relief efforts and ensuring the safety and welfare of communities,” said Dr. Yonazi.
He also commended all stakeholders who contributed to the successful implementation of the training, including TİKA, the IORA Secretariat, the Turkish Red Crescent, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, for their strong collaboration and significant contributions.
