Tanzania leads Africa in WSIS 2025 awards champion stage

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA is celebrating a major milestone on the global digital stage following an impressive showing in the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) 2025 Awards.
According to a statement released by the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) yesterday, in a highly competitive process that began in October 2024, a total of 973 projects were submitted globally.
Of these, 360 projects were shortlisted for public voting in April 2025. Tanzania emerged as a standout performer, contributing 14 projects to the shortlist.
Last Thursday, the WSIS organisation officially announced the 90 Champion Projects for the WSIS 2025 Awards.
From across the globe, 23 champion projects came from Africa, representing 20 countries.
Notably, Tanzania leads the continent with three champion projects, the highest number of any African nation.

These champion projects from Tanzania fall under the category “ICT Applications: Benefits in All Aspects of Life”, including e-health, egovernment and e-science.
The recognised projects are e-Mrejesho V2 by the e-Government Authority (eGA), Zanzibar Health Services Project by Pharmacess and STEM4All by St Joseph University.
The TCRA statement noted that this achievement highlights Tanzania’s continued progress in digital innovation, effective policy implementation and strategic investment in ICT for development.
“It also reflects the visionary leadership of Her Excellency President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, under whose guidance Tanzania has made significant strides in leveraging technology to drive socio-economic transformation and accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” reads part of the statement.
According to the statement, all attention now turns to Geneva, Switzerland, where the 18 final WSIS award winners will be announced at the WSIS+20 event on July 7th, this year.
