Tanzania launches goat, sheep fattening project

DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government has officially launched a five-year Build a Better Tomorrow (BBT) project on goat and sheep fattening at the Tanzania Livestock Research Institute (TALIRI) in Kongwa.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, aims to boost youth and women’s participation in commercial livestock entrepreneurship.
Speaking during an official inspection of the project’s infrastructure on November 27, 2025, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Agnes Meena, said the program is set to begin training early next year.

The training will equip young people with practical skills to manage livestock businesses profitably.
“This project will provide training to 200 youths every year, and over five years, nearly 1,750 young people are expected to benefit,” Meena noted.
She added that the project spans 2,000 hectares for livestock feed production and goes beyond goat and sheep fattening.

It will also cover fodder cultivation, meat production, and livestock feed processing, creating a holistic model for sustainable livestock farming.

Meena also called on ministry officials to develop recreational facilities within the project, including football, volleyball, and basketball courts, allowing youth to maintain physical fitness alongside their livestock farming activities.
The project is expected to create opportunities for youth and women to engage in profitable livestock farming, contributing to employment, food security, and the growth of Tanzania’s livestock sector.
