DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA claimed a decisive home victory against Nigeria, triumphing by six wickets in the inaugural match of the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup Africa Qualifier at Dar Gymkhana Ground.
The stadium buzzed with fervent supporters rallying behind the home team, creating an electrifying atmosphere from the outset
Opting to bat first, Nigeria faced a formidable Tanzanian bowling attack that proved too much to handle. Captain Laksh Bakrania led the charge, delivering a standout performance with figures of 3 wickets for 19 runs in his 10 overs. He received excellent support from Augustine Mwamele (3-15) and Ally H. Ally (2-19).
A defining moment came when Bakrania executed a stunning one-handed catch and bowled to dismiss Femi Oresenwo, who had been pivotal in partnerships with Ali Rahmon and Kenneth Boniface. Despite their efforts, Nigeria succumbed to 127 all out in 45.4 overs.
In reply, Tanzania confidently chased down the target, reaching 128/4 in 35.4 overs. Karim Kiseto shone brightly, becoming the tournament’s first half-centurion with his composed 57 off 88 deliveries, ably supported by Hamza Onai (20 off 37 balls).
Although Nigerian bowlers Progress Osagie (2-22) and Okasha Isiyaku (1-30) attempted to apply pressure, Tanzania maintained composure to secure the victory.
“This win holds great significance for us as the host nation. The team displayed resilience and determination and we are delighted to begin the tournament on a positive note,” remarked Tanzanian captain Laksh Bakrania.
For Tanzania, this victory carried extra weight as it avenged their defeat against Nigeria in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Africa Qualifier 2023 Division 1, where both teams were relegated to Division 2.
