Tanzania Cricket Legends to strengthen ties with TCA

DAR ES SALAAM: IN a spirited gathering that brought together pillars of Tanzania’s cricketing past and present, members of the Cricket Legends of Tanzania convened for a significant meeting aimed at reviewing the group’s ongoing activities and future engagement with the Tanzania Cricket Association (TCA).
According to the group’s Senior Administrator, Dinesh Vaishnav, the meeting featured the highly respected Ahmed Himid, a cricket and hockey legend who represented Zanzibar, Tanganyika and East Africa during the 1950s and 60s.
Renowned for his wisdom and extensive sporting experience, Himid’s continued engagement in group affairs remains a guiding force in the team’s development.
He was joined by Shahid Dhanani, who currently serves as the Cricket Legends’ representative on the TCA board, and Vaishnav himself.
Also participating were Kanu Rathod, the UK-based Group Lead and Senior Country Coordinator Bashir Tejani from Arusha, who joined via conference call.
Vaishnav highlighted that the meeting served as a key platform to review progress and reaffirm the group’s commitment to supporting cricket development in the country.
“It was agreed that a formal report outlining the meeting’s deliberations will be submitted to Group Management and the TCA leadership for further engagement,” he stated.
The meeting concluded with a shared resolve to continue supporting the TCA wherever necessary, while preserving the group’s mission of celebrating the legacy of cricket and promoting the sport’s future across Tanzania.
“Himid remains a beacon of inspiration to us all, a man of exceptional insight and humility, whose contribution adds tremendous value to our organisational strength,” Vaishnav added, extending his gratitude to all participants who made the meeting a success.
The Cricket Legends of Tanzania Group was established on 21 May 2021, following an idea initiated by Kanu Rathod, who collaborated with like-minded veteran players.
The group was initially launched as a WhatsApp platform designed to reconnect retired and veteran cricketers from the nation.
Its mission remains simple yet powerful: To revive and celebrate the rich history of cricket in Tanganyika—now Tanzania— by honouring the players and their contributions and fostering unity among those who have shaped the game from Zanzibar to Kilimanjaro.
“It is our shared love for the game that continues to bring us together,” Vaishnav concluded.
