Tanzania boxer sails to All Africa Games quarters

GHANA: IN a thunderous display of power, Tanzanian boxer, Ezra Mwanjwango secured a resounding victory, halting his opponent, William Mohamed from Seychelles, via Referee Stop Contest (RSC) in All Africa Games round of 16 in Accra, Ghana late on Saturday Mwanjwango’s relentless onslaught of heavy blows left the Seychellois reeling, prompting the referee to intervene and spare him from further punishment.
It was in the second round, 2 minutes and 38 seconds, where the Tanzanian boxer from the Black Rhino Squad from Ngorongoro delighted his fans by finishing the bout by RSC. Meanwhile, late yesterday another bout featuring a Tanzanian boxer Abdallah Mafaume faced a Zambian in the welterweight division at 67kg.
Before Mwanjwango advanced to quarters, Tanzanian medalist Abdallah Abdallah was stretchered out of the ring in the third round after fracturing his right arm in a flyweight fight against Ethiopia’s Wibshet Dawit. He led 3-2 and 5-0 in the first and second rounds.
In the course of closequarter exchanges with the Ethiopian boxer, Abdallah broke his right arm.
A disappointed assistant coach of Tanzania’s national team Muhisini Mngola said they rushed Abdallah to the University of Ghana Medical Centre where he was diagnosed to have incurred a right arm injury.
“They examined him carefully and told us he had broken the mid-part of his right arm. He will be out of action for some time,” said Mngola. Abdallah was at a loss as to what led to his injury.
“I was winning the fight, I aimed to meet the Zambian boxer going to the Olympics (Patrick Chinyemba) to show Africa and the world my capabilities,” said Abdallah.
In some of the other bouts, Algeria’s featherweight Selmouni Chahira had little difficulty in beating Ethiopia’s Genet Charbo 5-0, Nigeria’s Joy Ojo Nene outpointed Uganda’s Sharua Ndagire, Nigeria’s Paris-bound featherweight Dolapo Omole defeated Egypt’s Ahmed Mohamed 5-0 and Zambia’s Albert Ngulube beat South Africa’s Amzolele Dyeyi 5-0 in the featherweight division.
