Tanzania begins to train its human resources in nuclear science & technology

VIENNA: TANZANIA has begun developing human resources in Nuclear Science and Technology at both local and foreign institutions, to build national capacity and reduce reliance on foreign experts.
The move aims at ensuring the safety and sustainability of nuclear technology use in the country.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Prof Carolyne Nombo, made the statement in Vienna, Austria, during a special meeting with the Director of the Africa Division at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Dr Gashaw Wolde, on the sidelines of the 69th IAEA General Conference.

In their discussion, the two leaders discussed progress in the safe use of nuclear technology in the health, agriculture, water, and energy sectors, along with the training of local experts to implement nuclear projects.

Additionally, Prof Nombo said that the cooperation between Tanzania and the IAEA has brought significant benefits in the health sector through cancer treatment using radiation, in agriculture through research on improved seeds, and in preparations for the use of clean nuclear energy.
On her side, Dr Wolde commended Tanzania’s efforts and emphasized that it is an important partner of the IAEA in the African region while pledging to strengthen close cooperation in nuclear projects and expand training opportunities for experts in nuclear science and technology, particularly in medical equipment.
